Bladder and Bowel Control
Constipation is when bowel movements are uncomfortable, difficult to pass and/or less frequent than normal (usually less than 3-4 times per week). Constipation can be caused by pelvic floor tightness or poor coordination of the pelvic floor muscles when trying to evacuate stool (outlet problem), or from slow digestion and movement in the gut/bowel itself (motility problem).
In physical therapy we will address both issues because constipation is not normal and can lead to other pelvic health problems down the road. Based on our findings, we will address pelvic floor muscle coordination and tension to optimize pelvic floor function. We may also address strategies to optimize bowel health, including dietary considerations, toilet positioning, stress management and creating healthy bowel habits.
